Wakefield Catenian Association raised £4,792 for Macmillan Cancer Support on 500 mile bike ride.
Last year, Martin Dearnley and Andy Lowrey, members of the Wakefield Catenian association, decided they want to raise funds to help Macmillan as they had both had been affected by cancer in their families and had benefited by the help of Macmillan. Andy’s daughter-in- law, only in her 20’s has only just been given the all-clear after suffering from cancer after 3 years of treatment and major surgery.
They decided to cycle 500 mile across the Northern Spain from Pamplona to Santiago de Compostela following the more than 1000 year-old pilgrim’s route “Camino de Santiago”. They did it in 10 days, sleeping in “albergues” (pilgrim’s hostals) along the route. It was much tougher than they expected but a worthwhile challenge.
With sponsorship money from individual Catenians, friends, work colleagues, relations, members of St. Ignatius Church (Ossett) and more, they raised a total of £4,792.
A cheque was presented to Stacey Rhodes of Macmillan fund at a special lunch at Kings Croft.
